Savour the delights of tranquil Lincolnshire, a land where gentle landscapes meet meandering rivers and ancient church spires pierce the skyline. The Fens are a major part of Lincolnshire with a character and beauty of their own, criss-crossed by miles of peaceful waterways. More to the north of the county lie the rolling hills of the Wolds, designated an Area of Outstanding National Beauty.
During the Second World War Lincolnshire became Bomber County, home to many Lancaster squadrons. Almost half Bomber Command's 19 Victoria Crosses honoured airmen flying from Lincolnshire, inlcluding Wing Commander Guy Gibson of 617 Squadron, the Dam Busters. By 1945 there were 49 airfields, more than any other county. We have inclusions to help you learn more about Bomber Command and the Aviation Heritage in Lincolnshire - including a visit to see the Just Jane Lancaster Bomber.
We collect you from home to join your coach and travel to Lincolnshire arriving at our hotel, Ramada Resort Grantham late afternoon.
Tuesday This morning our specialist guide joins us as we travel to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby. Experience the Sights And Sounds, Smells and Atmosphere of a bomber airfield. The only place in the country to see a Lancaster Bomber on an original wartime airfield. Including, original Control Tower, welcoming NAAFI and an emotionally evocative Memorial Chapel containing the 848 names of personnel who gave their lives from this airfield. A taxy run by the Lancaster 'Just Jane' is scheduled during our visit, you will get to see, feel and hear the mighty Merlin engines roar! (Taxy runs are dependent on serviceability and weather conditions).
This afternoon we make our way to RAF Coningsby, the Royal Air Force's Southern Typhoon Main Operating Base, home to two front line, combat ready squadrons and The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre which we will be visiting with a full guided tour. Within the hangar, you will usually see: Lancaster PA474 - Out of 7,377 Lancasters built, PA474 is one of only two Lancasters remaining in airworthy condition - the other being in Canada. Douglas Dakota ZA947 and the RAF BBMF’s six spitfires, two hurricanes, and two chipmunks. (Due to RAF commitments, flypasts and displays we cannot guarantee the presence of specific aircraft in the RAF BBMF hanger)
Wednesday Today we head to magnificent Burghley House, one of the largest and grandest Elizabethan houses, built in 1555 by the Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I. From Burghley, we continue on to pretty Rutland, England's smallest county, where we will then embark on a 45-minute cruise on Rutland Water, one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe. This informative and relaxing cruise benefits from audio commentary from the captain. A Cream Tea of scones with jam & cream with tea or coffee is served on board before setting sail.
Thursday Today we visit Lincoln which boasts over 2,000 years of history with a magnificent architectural heritage centred on its world famous cathedral and castle. Browse the shops and traditional tea rooms of the cobbled Steep Hill or stroll around the Brayford Waterfront viewing the many sculptures. You are treated to a guided tour on the coach of this historic city and a short walking tour of the Cathedral & Castle. The tour will also include a visit to the new International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln, a world-class facility to serve as a point for recognition, remembrance and reconciliation for Bomber Command.
