Kent is known as the ‘Garden of England’ and it’s easy to see why. Steeped in history and heritage, discover the essence of this region with its perfect blend of historic houses and gardens, city and countryside. Our itinerary includes visits to some of the highlights of the area including Ightham Mote, Canterbury, Godinton House & Gardens and Chartwell.
Friday We travel to Kent and visit Ightham Mote. Built nearly 700 years ago, Ightham Mote has been described as ‘one of the most beautiful and interesting English country houses’. The house has seen many changes – having been owned by medieval knights, courtiers to Henry VIII and high-society Victorians. The gardens are as equally diverse as the house - a formal lawn, flower borders, secret glades and a sweetly scented cuttings garden. And then there are walks and views taking in lakes, an orchard, ancient bluebell woodland and Kentish farmland. Following our visit we continue to Ashford and our hotel for the next two nights dinner, bed & breakfast.
Saturday This morning we travel to the historic cathedral city of Canterbury nestled in the beautiful East Kent countryside. Steeped in history, the city offers a perfect blend of old and new with its enchanting cobbled streets and medieval buildings sitting comfortably with the more modern architecture and shopping centre. No visit would be complete without a visit to Canterbury Cathedral. Attracting visitors since the days of medieval pilgrimages and the murder of Thomas Becket in the Cathedral in 1170, it has some of the oldest and most beautiful stained glass windows in England. This afternoon we continue to Godinton House and Gardens. We have a guided tour of this Jacobean house incorporating a medieval hall, Tudor staircase and later additional carvings, furniture, porcelain and contrasting decoration, reflect its fascinating history. Set in 12 acres of wonderful gardens and surrounded by tranquil parkland.
Sunday After breakfast we check out of our hotel and visit Chartwell House and Gardens. Chartwell was the family home of Winston Churchill. Filled with treasures from every aspect of Churchill’s life, the house here at Chartwell provides an opportunity to explore the home of one of Britain’s greatest leaders. Following our visit we make our way back home.
