Tucked away in the beautiful valley of the River Geul is enchanting Valkenburg, a splendid spa town in the historic province of Limburg. The surrounding ‘Dutch Alps’ are characterised by rolling hills, forests, brooks, sunken roads and meandering rivers.

The tradition of carnival in the Netherlands dates back to medieval times. The Dutch really go to town to make these annual events full of excitement, spectacle and fun. Fabulously decorated floats and colourful characters in exotic costumes ensure that the carnival parades are not to be missed, whilst bars and cafes are alive with the sounds of local bands and great music.

Saturday - We depart our local area early morning and travel direct to Folkestone for our crossing to Calais. Making comfort stops en-route we arrive in Valkenburg late afternoon.

Sunday - Carnival Parade Maastricht. After breakfast we make the short journey to nearby Maastricht for ‘Carnival Sunday’. Maastricht carnival usually has street celebrations, a huge parade, live bands and DJs, plus endless happy faces. The magnificent costumes are one of the carnival’s most impressive features. Many families spend months preparing weird and wonderful outfits, as everyone dresses up.

Monday - Valkenburg at leisure. Time to relax and enjoy the many facilities in Valkenburg. The town holds parades consisting of strange, grotesque papier-mache figures on floats and people dressed in outrageous outfits. Brass bands blast out oompah music as the normally staid citizens suddenly dance the conga together through the streets.

Tuesday - After a leisurely breakfast we say our farewells for our return journey to Calais and our return crossing to Folkestone, arriving home early evening.
