This two centre holiday combines a stay in Germany’s vibrant capital, Berlin and the beautifully reconstructed city of Dresden. With leisure days at both this trip is the perfect chance to explore and enjoy these magnificent cities as you please. Enjoy the depth of history that run through both destinations while at your own pace, however we do have an included visit to Colditz and its famous castle which was used as a prisoner of war camp in World War 2.
Thursday We collect you from your home to travel down to Folkestone for our Channel crossing to Calais, continuing to our overnight hotel making suitable stops en-route.
Friday This morning we continue the journey eastwards through the Westerwald and past Hanover to reach Berlin and our city centre hotel where we will stay for the next two nights.
Saturday Today you have a day at leisure in Berlin, among the sights to see are the new Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, the ‘Wall’ and of course the Kurfürstendamm, the most popular shopping boulevard in the city. Berlin is the emotional heart of the country and once again the capital of the reunited Germany.
Sunday After breakfast we have a leisurely drive south making a stop in Colditz, a historic town dating back to the Middle Ages. Included is a guided tour and entrance to the famous castle. Since being first built the castle has had a range of uses from a royal hunting lodge to a psychiatric hospital, but most famously it was used as a prisoner of war camp during World War 2. Following our visit, we continue on to the beautiful city of Dresden and our city centre hotel for the next two nights.
Monday Today we have a day at leisure to explore the city of Dresden. The city was badly damaged during World War 2 but has since been lovingly reconstructed with many of its historic buildings restored to their former glory including the beautiful Dresden Castle. Throughout the city there are a number of other famous landmarks, such as Zwinger Palace and the Semper Opera House to be visited, or a look around Dresden City Museum to learn more history of the city.
Tuesday We depart Dresden and travel through what used to be East Germany, past the cities of Chremnitz and Erfurt as well as the fairytale town of Alsfeld on the Machenstrasse, before reaching your last overnight hotel.
Wednesday Following breakfast we continue our homeward journey to Calais for our Channel crossing and then on to Wiltshire where we will meet your taxis.
