The picturesque Rhine Valley has grand castles and sprawling vineyards clinging to the hillside plus charming towns and villages and is an idyllic destination. A superb experience awaits you as our visit also showcases a unique annual event, the Rhine In Flames. We travel to Koblenz, one of Germany’s oldest cities, full of ruined castles, historic churches and townhouses to enjoy this event.
We are making a return to the always popular Boppard¸ the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’. We also experience some of the charming little railways of the Rhine, as well as a river cruise offering panoramic views and spectacular scenery.
Thursday – We collect you from home to join your tour coach and make our way for our Channel Crossing, after our crossing we will continue via the auto-routes of France, Belgium and Germany to arrive at our hotel in Boppard early evening.
Friday – Today we spend some free time in Boppard before hopping on board for a one-way river cruise from Boppard, upstream through the northern section of the UNESCO protected Upper Middle Rhine Valley, to Oberlahnstein, from where we continue by coach to Königswinter, a historic Rhine Valley town located at the foot of the Siebengebirge Hills. Here we join the Drachenfelsbahn, Germany’s oldest cog railway, for a short return journey. From the Valley Station to the summit we cover a height difference of 220m and at the top we see the ruined medieval Drachenfels (‘dragon’s cliff’) Castle with great views across the River Rhine. After our time in Königswinter, we return to our hotel by coach.
Saturday – After breakfast you will enjoy a guided tour of Boppard, after some leisure time, we will return to the hotel for lunch today. This afternoon we will journey to Koblenz for Rhine in Flames. Here you will have the chance to grab some dinner and get stuck into the celebrations. The dazzling fireworks display sets the Rhine ablaze with colour. This spectacular display is a sight not to be missed and can be viewed from the city promenade. Due to this being an evening excursion we won’t be aiming to return to the hotel till late evening.
Please note: Dinner is not included this evening. All fireworks events are weather dependant and subject to cancellation or date/time changes.
Sunday – Today we head to the Moselle Valley and the pretty riverside town of Cochem, where we enjoy some time at leisure to explore the Old Town, made up of quaint squares, winding alleys, half-timbered buildings and imposing town gates, watched over by its magnificent 11th Century Reichsburg Castle, a Gothic masterpiece which is perched on a rocky outcrop from where there are fantastic views.
Monday – Today we travel to Brohl for a one-way journey on the Vulkan Express, a unique narrow-gauge railway. The line meanders up through the Brohl Valley into the Eifel Hills, where the dramatic rock formations were created during a period of volcanic activity. Opened in 1901, the 11-mile journey takes one and a half hours as the locomotives reach a speed of 20km, climbing around 1,310 ft. We continue by coach from Engeln to the Ahr Valley, one of Germanys most famous wine growing regions where we visit the charming town of Mayschoss and enjoy a wine tasting in one of the town’s traditional wine cellars.
Tuesday – We depart after breakfast and retrace our steps back to Calais and our Channel crossing, returning you to your taxi mid evening.
