This tour takes us to enjoy a long weekend in the North of England, staying in County Durham and visiting the Beamish Open-Air Living Museum of the North, followed by a visit to the historic city of York, home to the National Railway Musuem and York Minister – the largest of its kind in Europe.
Saturday – This morning we collect you from your local pick up point as we make our way north, for a long weekend break in County Durham. We will arrive in the late afternoon at the Blackwell Grange Hotel where we will be staying for the next three nights.
Sunday – Today’s outing takes us north as we visit the famous Beamish North of England Open Air Museum, capturing the spirit of the North East in 1800’s and 1900’s. Attractions include restored tram and replica bus rides, authentic town streets, colliery villages, a mine, the old-fashioned sweet shop, the working farm and maybe see some of the steam locomotives.
Monday After breakfast we head into the ancient historic city of Durham, acclaimed as a World Heritage Site and dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral and Castle, high above the River Wear. You will have the day at leisure to explore the city before we return to the hotel late afternoon.
Tuesday – After a final breakfast at the hotel we will say goodbye to County Durham and head back to Wiltshire.
The Blackwell Grange Hotel, Darlington
The Blackwell Grange Hotel is a beautiful 17th Century mansion peacefully situated in nine acres of its own grounds and surrounded by a scenic 18-hole golf course. Building commenced in 1693 and was finally completed in 1717, the hotel was a private house until 1953. Hotel facilities include leisure club with heated indoor swimming pool, spa and sauna. All bedrooms are en suite and have a television, radio, telephone, hairdryer and tea & coffee making facilities.
